The Vietnam War was a major conflict between 1954 and 1975 in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. While officially a war between North Vietnam (supported by the Soviet Union and China) and South Vietnam (supported by the US and anti-communist allies), it was a proxy war between the US and Soviet Union during the Cold War. The US provided arms and funding to South Vietnam and was directly involved until 1973. Estimated millions of military and civilian deaths occurred, with Vietnamese civilians the most significant percentage.
