From 1967 to 1974 Greece was ruled by the Regime of the Colonels, following a military coup. Army officer George Papadopoulos declared himself Prime Minister and President, and his dictatorship was characterised by anti-communist policies, restrictions on civil liberties, and imprisonment of political opponents.
