When a general election was called in 1979 Britain had just been through a period of industrial unrest, known as the âWinter of Discontentâ. James Callaghan's Labour government ignored this and campaigned on their success in conquering inflation, which had been a problem in Britain since the 1973 global crisis over the price of oil.
Labour lost the 1979 election, and Margaret Thatcher's Conservative Party entered government, remaining in power for the next 18 years.
