Herbert Henry Asquith (1852-1928), known as H. H. Asquith was Prime Minister of the UK from 1908-1916. His government took the decision to bring Britain into the First World War following foreign policy where Britain had promised to protect France if they were threatened by Germany. Asquith was the last Liberal Party prime minister to rule without being in a coalition, and his government collapsed in 1916, replaced with a Liberal-Conservative coalition administration led by David Lloyd George. Other than the Great War, his government was known for welfare reforms that ultimately began what we now recognise as the welfare state including pensions, funding for working class children to go to school, and unemployment support. These programs were funded by taxes on the land and income of the wealthy.
