Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND)
Description
A round grey badge with a pink triangle in the centre, and a CND logo partially visible inside the triangle.
This badge uses the pink triangle symbol which is a reclaimed activist symbol used by LGBTQIA+ activists. The pink triangle was originally used in concentration camps by Nazis to label gay men. The linked pink triangle and CND logo illustrate the close connections between LGBTQIA+ activists and the peace/anti-nuclear movements. Prominent peace movement events, like the Greenham Common anti-nuclear peace camp, comprised of women occupying the land outside an RAF base housing US nuclear weapons, had larger than average proportions of LGBTQIA+ participants. This was particularly notable at the time (the 1980s), as diverse sexualities were not well tolerated in UK society.
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) is an organisation which campaigns for the UK to disarm and dispose of their nuclear weapons. They also campaign for international nuclear disarmament, and oppose the building of nuclear power stations in the UK, and oppose the use of chemical or biological weapons in wars. CND was founded in 1957 and is Europe's largest peace campaign.
