Title
Nuclear weapons did this..or was it conventional weapons
People
Peace Pledge Union
Date
circa 1980s
Description
Photocopy of a handwritten leaflet titled "Nuclear weapons did this... or was it conventional weapons?" alongside a black and white image of a sad and starved looking young person. The leaflet makes the argument that the majority of money spent of arms is spent on conventional weapons rather than nuclear ones, and that nuclear disarmament will only increase spending on conventional arms. The reverse is printed, and describes the beliefs of the Peace Pledge Union, and finishes with a form to join the union.
Founded in 1934, the Peace Pledge Union (PPU) promotes pacifism and nonviolence, educates on conscientious objection, and challenge everyday normalisation and veneration of the military. PPU distribute the white poppy each year in the run-up to Remembrance Day, as a symbol of remembrance of all victims of war, a challenge of militarism, and a commitment to peace. The poppies were first made in 1933 by the Co-operative Women's Guild, many of whom had lost family and friends in the First World War.
