"White poppies for peace leaflet" [Temp.2024.14.46]
Description
Black and white leaflet with text "white poppies for peace - REMEMBER AND DISARM". A photograph of two small wooden crosses with white poppies attached is in the centre. On the reverse side is information about the Peace Pledge Union and alternative ways to think about Remember Sunday to remember "the dead of all wars".
Founded in 1934, the Peace Pledge Union (PPU) promotes pacifism and nonviolence, educates on conscientious objection, and challenge everyday normalisation and veneration of the military. PPU distribute the white poppy each year in the run-up to Remembrance Day, as a symbol of remembrance of all victims of war, a challenge of militarism, and a commitment to peace. The poppies were first made in 1933 by the Co-operative Women's Guild, many of whom had lost family and friends in the First World War.
