Description
Poster with the wording 'Support the Dustmen's strike NO TROOPS IN GLASGOW'. At the bottom of the poster is a black and white photograph of piles of rubbish. At the top is the logo of the Socialist Worker.

Produced by the Socialist Worker to support the 1975 Glasgow Dust Cart Drivers' Strike.

The Glasgow Dust Cart Drivers' Strike saw a mass walkout by refuse collectors demanding higher wages and better working conditions. The unofficial walkout began on 12 January 1975 and lasted for thirteen weeks. 350 drivers withdrew their labour, whilst refuse collectors - who were not involved in the strike - handed out DIY bin bags to residents. By 5 March 1975, there were reportedly 50,000 tonnes of litter on Glasgow's streets and by 19 March troops were called in to remove rubbish from the streets. Drivers in Greenock, Gourock, Port Glasgow, and Dundee walked out in solidarity. On 9 April 1975 the Glasgow drivers called off their strike, having received no wage increase or improved conditions.
