Leon Brittan was a British Conservative politician who served in Margaret Thatcher's government. Between 1983 and 1985, Brittan served as Home Secretary. On 1 March 1985, Brittan visited Manchester University Students Union. A demonstration by around 500 people protesting government policies was heavily policed. When Brittan was pelted with eggs, police riot squad officers charged into the crows and made a number of arrests. The incident became known as the Battle of Brittan.
