Description
Booklet, 'Newham Monitoring Project Annual General Report 1984'.

The front cover shows two black and white images. The first shows two police officers manhandling a black youth whilst another man looks on. The onlooker is holding a sign reading "NO MORE RACIST ATTACKS! WE WILL FIGHT BACK". They are in front of signs which all read "BLACK COMMUNITY ON TRIAL NEWHAM 7 INNOCENT". The second image shows a body being held on the ground by four people. Two police helmets lay on the ground nearby. The title of the booklet is printed in red.

The report looks into racism in Newham, including reports of police harassment. It includes sections looking at racist families being evicted after breaking tenancy rules.

The reverse of the booklet includes information about the Newham Monitoring Project (NMP), and how they can help if readers have been harassed by the police, unjustly arrested, or attacked on the street.

The Newham Monitoring Project was founded in 1980, following the murder of teenager Akhtar Ali Baig, in East Ham. The group's purpose was initially to monitor racist attacks and the response of statutory authorities. The organisation's remit was extended to include reports of police harassment and misconduct, and the NMP published yearly reports showing their findings The group was associated with justice campaigns such as that of the Newham 7.
