A small white Sunderland lustre jug relating to the Peterloo massacre, c.1819.
The rim of the jug has been painted purple, and around the neck of the jug is a red and green flower motif. One side of the jug has been printed with a map of central Manchester where the massacre took place. Text above the map reads "A PLAN of the GROUND on which the REFORMERS met at MANCHESTER on MONDAY the 16 AUGUST 1819. And which proved so fatal to many". This map was from the short book 'Impartial Narrative of the late Melancholy Occurences in Manchester' by J. B. Smith, reforming Whig editor of the Liverpool Mercury, which was published in the late autumn of The other side is inscribed "NO CORN BILL UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE" among scrolls (Bill of Rights and Habeas Corpus), victory motifs and other mottoes.
The Peterloo Massacre began as a protest at St Peterâs Fields, in Manchester, when crowds gathered to hear Henry Hunt campaign for electoral reform. The authorities unleashed armed forces on the crowds. At least eighteen people were killed and the resulting outcry ignited a fire under the pro-democracy movement in Britain which eventually led to voting reform.
