Description
OSP script: Harold Macmillan caricature, by Ralph Sallon, 1964
Conservative and aristocratic Macmillan became Prime Minister in 1957. Under a slogan of 'Most of our people have never had it so good', he won the 1959 general election. He granted independence to colonial countries, a move opposed by many Conservatives. Mired in scandals and in poor health, he resigned in 1963.
