Description
A red and purple patchwork banner with small stitched images relating to women's rights, the peace movement and the Labour Party.
This banner was created by participants in a workshop at the National Museum of Labour History, the original name for Peopleâs History Museum in around 1988. It was used on many demonstrations for a range of causes, including the Peopleâs March for Jobs, anti-racism , Jobs for Sacked Miners, and against the Poll Tax in 1992 in London.
To create the banner, each woman took a square and a letter and worked with it as she pleased. Various embroidery silks and wools, embroidery books, and samples were used. The oblongs around the border represent the interests of the women who made the banner; a participant was active in the peace movement, a librarian embroidered old books, another chose stags representing the Mansfield football team, and oak trees to represent Sherwood forest.
