Description
Millennium quilt, 1999

The Millennium quilt was designed by Ann Gibson and Carol Sandiford and was made by the Manchester Adult Education Centre. The quilt took nearly three years to make and involved over 100 people in various workshops held throughout Manchester. It was carried at the Manchester's Coming Home celebrations in 2000. It was shortly after this on display in the Engine hall of the Pump House people's History Museum.

The quilt celebrates Manchester's textiles, past and present. The outer circle represents the wheel which was influential in the textile industry. The spokes depict various parts of Manchester's heritage and culture, and the images in the corners represent the four corners of the world - Asia, Africa, the Orient and Manchester. The outside bricks represent individuals and form the symbolic structure upon which the future of the Manchester Adult Education Centre is built going into the new millennium.

Materials: Combination of hand and machine sewing techniques using synthetic and natural fabrics, with designs worked in embroidery, applied work, lacework, painting and possibly printing.

The theme of the quilt is Manchester's textiles, past and present. The design reflects the different communities within the City. Over 100 people were involved in making the quilt and workshops were held throughout Manchester.
