Description
An attractive male election candidate in bright clothing 'The Ladies Candidate' is surrounded by crowds of adoring women and their husbands. 'The Gentlemens Candidate', a grumpy looking man in a brown suit stands ignored to the side of the picture.

The Rights of Women or The Effects of Female Enfranchisement was produced by George Cruikshank, for his 1853 'Comic Almanack'. Produced over 70 years before women would achieve voting equality, the cartoon implies that women could not make rational political decisions and would choose candidates based on physical attractiveness rather than policies.

George Cruikshank (27 September 1792 – 1 February 1878) was a British caricature artist who created satire art, commenting on the political situation in Britain during his lifetime, and social issues like alcohol addiction.
