Description
A clocking in machine - a dark wooden cabinet containing a clock. There is a slot at the bottom to insert a time card, and a lever to have the card punched.

This clocking in machine was used at Kershaw's Mill in Bolton. Clocking in is done to record the time workers enter and leave work each day. This was intended to ensure that management knew if workers were present when they were supposed to be. However, unscrupulous managers could alter the clock on the machine to make workers work longer hours without knowing it.
