Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers, Manchester District banner, date unknown
In 1921 two separate unions, the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners and the General Union of Carpenters and Joiners, merged to form the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers. This banner belonged to the Manchester District of the Union.
The union originally represented skilled woodworkers. However changes in technology led to the introduction of less skilled members. It was one of several unions that joined together in 1970 to form the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT).
Materials: Reyon rep and paint. Rayon was the first manmade textile fibre, first produced in 1884 and rep is a ribbed or corded fabric.
