Description
The Amalgamated Union of Building Trades Workers was established on 1 January 1921 as a result of a merger between the Friendly Society of Operative Stonemasons of England, Ireland and Wales, the London Order of Operatiive Bricklayers Society and the Manchester Unity of Operative Bricklayers Society. Brixton is in southwest London.
The union's aim was to represent all sectors of the building industry within a single organisation. Other unions joined over the years; the National Builders, Labourers and Constructional Workers Society in 1952, the NAtional Society of Street Masons, Paviours and Roadmakers in 1966 and the Amalgamted Slaters, Tilers and Roofing Operatives Society in 1969. In 1971, the union merged with the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers to form the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians
