Description
The Left Book Club was launched in May 1936 by the publisher Victor Gollancz with help from Harold Laski and John Strachey. The club published a regular series of books on subjects of left wing appeal, mainly international affairs and other topical issues.

Readers were encouraged to pass on the books after they had finished with them. Through this and the activities of local groups, the Left Book Club established a wide readership and exerted a considerable influence.

Support for the club was weakened as a result of the German Soviet pact of 1939 and after World War II their influence diminished. They finally folded in 1948.

Some complete sets of Left Book Club editions survive and the museum has a number of titles in its archive.

Materials: Painted design on a cotton ground.
