To the YCL of Shipley banner, 1920s
2011 marks 90 years since the founding of the Young Communist League (YCL) in October 1921. Like the Communist Party of Great Britain the YCL had hoped revolution was just around the corner and established strong links with the Soviet Union. This banner was brought back from Russia in the early 1920s by Maggie Jordan, a prominent member of the YCL in West Yorkshire. She came from Shipley where she was a mill worker.
Although politically linked to the Communist Party of Great Britain the YCL was in fact independent and even published its own newspaper, the Young Communist.

The banner appears to have the same inscription on the reverse, but written in Russian.

Materials: Ground of red rep with machine embroidered lettering and decoration. Rep is a ribbed or corded fabric.
