Hands off Malaya banner, around 1948
This banner was donated to the museum by the Bradford Communist Party (BCP). It is believed to have been made by Alan Foster, a member of the BCP. It was carried at a demonstration in Bradford opposing the British Army campaign in Malaya.
British intervention in Malaya began during the Industrial Revolution, when it was found to be rich in natural resources such as tin and rubber.
Calls for independence began to grow after World War II, during which time the Japanese had occupied Malaya. The Malayan Communist Party (MCP) had grown considerably during this time and many feared that they may try to take power. Malaya finally won independence 55 years ago in 1957 after negotiations with the British Government.
