Description
The National and Local Government Officers' Association was founded in 1905 as the National Association of Local Government Officers. It changed its name in 1952 but was still known as NALGO. It merged with the National Union of Public Employees and the Confederation of Health Service Employees to form UNISON in 1993.
The banner was designed by Ed Hall, a NALGO official, and was paid for by the union. County Hall, facing the Houses of Parliament, accomodated the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA), which operated between 1986 and 1990. [I think ILEA was created long before 1986, NM]
The bid to save County Hall did not succeed and the building is now the Marriot County Hall Hotel. The Greater London Authority is now based at City Hall, by Tower Bridge, which the Queen opened on 23 July 2002.
