Description
The banner shows an image of a union officer handing money over to a widow and her family. This illustrates one of the functions of the unions of this period, which was to provide for members and their families in the event of sickness or death at a time when there was still little state support for those in need.

This banner was made by George Tutill, the famous manufacturer based in City Road, London. Tutill himself exhibited at the Royal Academy, in 1847, and his company employed many talented artists.

Materials: Hand painted oil-based image on single layer jacquered woven silk ground, bordered with crimson rep woven silk. Jacquered weaving is a technique that produces patterns in more than one colour. 'Rep' is a ribbed or corded fabric.
