Pension societies were common before a state pension was introduced in the UK. It allowed the worker to pay in and save for their old age or a time when they may need to retire due to disabilities or workplace injuries. Often, the pension societies were industry specific, and many also paid out a worker's saved contributions to their widow on the worker's death.
