Description
The rising sun of Socialism figures in the logo of NUPE, utilised here by the Sheffield branch. The banner has been re-painted; on the reverse "Your Welfare is Our Concern" may still be discerned beneath the blue over painting.

NUPE acquired its name in 1928, although its origins go back to the London County Councils Employees Protection Society, founded in 1888. The aims of the union in 1928 were to organise all local authority workers in Britain.

Other major unions successfully ensured NUPE's exclusion from the TUC for many years, claiming that the union was a "breakaway" organisation. At one time the union had the highest percenage of female members of any union in the country.

Materials: oil paint on knitted nylon.
