Description
The National Union of Railwaymen was formed in 1913 and by the early 1920s was one of the most powerful industrial unions in the country.
The winged female figure on the rear of the banner, representing industrial unionism, is very close to the heroic female figures produced by the late Victorian socialist artist, Walter Crane.
The banner was made by George Tutill, London.
Materials: Banner of single layer fabric comprising ground of crimson silk rep, hand painted on each side with oil-based medium and blue polyester borders. The banner has been restored during its working life; borders and fringe are replacements for the original silk components and the ground silk has been repaired with net.
