Description
This ornately embroidered banner comes from the Brighton branch of the NWSPU.

The organisation was founded in Manchester in 1903, at the home of the Pankhurst family, as the Women's Social and Political Union. The organisation campaigned amongst Independent Labour Party branches for support for women's suffrage. The national committee was formed in 1905.

Brighton's banner is embroidered in cotton on cotton sateen. The town's coat of arms is incorporated into the design.

Materials: Ground of wool twill, with cotton thread and cotton sateen fabric applied embroidery.

This banner was found in a Brighton junk shop by Andy Durr (1945-2015) and presented to the museum in about 1980.
