In the period 1916 to 1921 unskilled trade unions (especially those catering for women) grew three fold underr the positive impact of the First World War. With the depression of 1921 all union membership declined. But the growth often continued in Southern England with new industries (eg electronics, food processing and motor manufacturing). This TGWU banner from Chelmsford is typical of these trends.
