From 1966 to 1990, Namibia was occupied by South Africa and the liberation movement was led by SWAPO (South West Africa People's Organisation). During the occupation, SWAPOâs leaders were imprisoned and there was armed fighting between the Peopleâs Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) and the South African military. In the UK, the Namibia Support Committee was founded in 1969 to campaign and raise funds to support SWAPO. Following independence, they became the leading political party.
