Description
A handwritten ledger book listing the names and addresses of subscribing members of the Negro Association, Manchester.
This book records the subscribers/members of the Negro Association, Manchester which was founded by Dr Peter Milliard in 1943. The membership list demonstrates Black self-organisation and agency within Manchester in the mid 20th century. Members included the future President of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta, who lived in Manchester at the time. Members of the Negro Association also formed the Manchester branch of the Pan-African Federation in 1945.
Both groups actively worked in solidarity to support anti-colonial struggles in Africa, where many countries were agitating for independence from the British and other colonial empires; and and anti-racist activism within the UK where Black workers were subject to a 'colour bar' preventing Black and Asian people from working in certain professions. Their activism included the Negro Association raising funds to support the general strike in Nigeria in 1945, and organising the 1945 Pan-African Congress which was held in Manchester. A Congress delegate, Mr Richardson, whose name appears in the subscription book, told reporters at the time that he was working âto help civilise the English peopleâ.
