The African National Congress (ANC) are a South African political party and liberation movement who's leadership has included Nelson Mandela. They were formed in opposition to the apartheid era where the white minority ruled South Africa and oppressed Black, mixed race and South Asian South Africans through political and economic disenfranchisement, mass relocation and segregation policies prohibiting mixed race relationships. There was also extreme state violence including police brutality like the Sharpsville Massacre. In response the ANC used civil disobedience and direct action with the aim for liberation for people of colour in South Africa.

The ANC was banned by the South African government, and considered a terrorist organisation by the South African state and her allies, including the UK until 1990. Many ANC leaders, including Nelson Mandela were jailed for their membership, or had to go into exile outside of South Africa. The ANC helped to negotiate the end of apartheid rule, and the party's Nelson Mandela became the first president of South Africa after the end of apartheid rule. The ANC continue as a political party today.
