Description
Hampstead Labour Party banner, around 1920

Composite applied fabric and embroidered banner in 1910-1920’s embroidery style. The image shows a barefoot woman clothed in red bodice over a flowing white dress and red cap of liberty. She is casting seeds onto the ground from a shoulder basket and has a cockerel at her feet. Around her head is a wreath of ribbon-bound laurel and rays of sunshine. To the left and right of her head are cartouches declaring ‘The earth for all’ and ‘Not for the few’ respectively.

The banner was donated after being found in the attic of the former chair of Hampstead Labour Party, Paul Segal. The last time anyone remembers it being used was at a demonstration against the war in Vietnam, held outside the United States embassy in Grosvenor Square, in 1968.
