Description
The National Association of Operative Plasterers union is generally thought to have started aroung 1860 from the amalgamation of three unknown smaller plasterers' groups. This union paid "friendly benefits" to its members, but did not provide unemployment pay. In 1895 the union absorbed the Liverpool Operative Plasterers Trade, Accident and Burial Society and the Metropolitan Trade Society of Operative Plasterers. In 1898 the plasterers achieved their first national agreement on wages and working conditions, after a 3 month strike about piecework. In 1918 the union changed its name to the National Association of Plasterers, Granolithic and Cement workers, and subsequently affiliated to the National Federation of Building Trade Operatives. It withdrew this affiliation in 1924 but re-affiliated in in 1933. In 1955 the union finally achieved a daily tool allowance for its members. In 1968 it transferred its interests to the Transport and General Workers Union.
