Description
The Amalgamated Society of Shuttlemakers was founded in 1891 by a group of shuttlemakers in Lancashire and Yorkshire. In 1900 it had 277 members in 10 branches, rising to 331 members in 1910. After the Second World War 90% of shuttlemakers in Britain belonged to the union, numbering around 600 workers. Membership dwindled due to the invention of the shuttleless loom (1942) and the loss of Indian markets, until the union was dissolved in 1993 with only 7 members remaining.
