Description
The Amalgamated Wheelwrights, Smiths and Kindred Trades Union was formed in Bolton 1830 under the title Loyal Wheelwrights and Blacksmiths Society. this name changed in 1870 to the Loyal, Free, Industrious Society of Wheelwrights and Blacksmiths. In 1900 it had 1,540 members in 26 branches. The union fined members for such offences as falling asleep during meetings and singing obscene songs during club hours. In 1908 the union amalgamated with the smaller Amalgamated Wheelwrights and Carriage Makers Union to form the Amalgamated Society of Wheelwrights, Smiths and Motor Body Makers. In December 1921 the Amalgamated Wheelwrights, Smiths and Kindred Trades Union was formed from this union. The union then merged with the National Union of Vehicle Builders in 1925.
