Description
The General Iron Fitters Union/Association was formed in 1892 as the Associated Society of Range, Stove and Ornamental Workers. By 1910 the title had been changed to the General Iron Fitters Association. At this time there was a membership of 982 in 4 branches. The union members were mainly in the Falkirk area, although some members from Glasgow joined later. In 1965 the union was renamed as the Scottish Metal Workers Union. In 1968 it merged with the General and Municipal Workers Union.
