Description
The Amalgamated Society of Enginemen, Cranemen and Firemen was established in 1889. By 1892 the society had 3,746 members. in 1893 the society split into two, 990 members forming the Northern United Enginemen's Association and the remaining members becoming the National Amalgamated Society of Enginemen, Cranemen, Boilermen and Firemen. Both of these unions were based in the north-east and extended recruitment to Scotland. In 1894 the National Amalgamated Society of Enginemen, Cranemen, Boilermen and Firemen claimed to have a membership of 2,311, rising to 3,671 in 1899 and then dropping slightly to 3,460 in 1901. By 1906 this figure had reached 4,056 but dropped again in 1910 to 3,785. In 1906 the name became the National Amalgamated Society of Enginemen, Cranemen, Boilermen, Firemen and Electrical Workers. In 1912 the union merged with the British Steel Smelters, Mill, Iron, Tinplate and Kindred Trades Association.
