Description
The society was founded in 1846 under the title London and Provincial Society of Coopersmiths. By 1900 it had a membership of 464 in 5 branches. The membership figure rose to 775 in 1910, and in this year the society changed its name to the National Society of Coppersmiths, Braziers and Metalworkers. In 1920 it remained uninvolved with the amalgamation of similar unions which resulted in the formation of the National Union of Sheet Metal Workers and Braziers. However, in July 1959 it amalgamated with this union to form the National Union of Shee Metal Wokers and Coppersmiths. At the date of the amalgamation the National Society of Coppersmiths, Braziers and Metalworkers had a membership of around 6,000 and the National Union of Sheet Metal Workers and Braziers numbered almost 43,000 members.
