Description
The union was founded under the title of the National Amalgamated Union of Enginemen, Cranemen, Hammer Drivers and Boiler Firemen of Great Britain in 1895, and was based in Rotherham. At the time of formation membership numbered 2,071. Membership rose sharply to 2,581 in 1896 and then to nearly 6,000 in 1901. In 1901 the union was renamed the National Amalgamated Enginemen, Cranemen, Hammer, Steam and Electric Tram Drivers and Boiler Firemen. In 1904, with 5,753 members, the union was again renamed, becoming the National Amalgamated Enginemen of Great Britain. It changed identity again in 1910, becoming the National Union of Enginemen, Firemen, Mechanics and Electrical Workers, with a membership of 5,698 in 98 branches. By 1925 it was the only remaining union catering to these workers, as all other local unions for firemen and enginemen had disappeared. In 1926 the union merged with the Transport and General Workers Union.
