Description
The National Union of Foundry Workers was formed on 28th June 1920 as the result of an amalgamation between the Friendly Society of Iron Founders, the Amalgamated Society of Coremakers of Great Britain and Ireland, and the Associated Iron Moulders of Scotland. The purpose of the amalgamation was to try to solve a situation wherein 11 unions of various kinds catered for different kinds of moulders. Of these 11 unions 5 were solely for moulders, 1 solely for coremakers, 1 accepted moulders as well as fitters and grinders in the stove grate industry and two were labourers unions who accepted moulders. In 1946 this aim was fulfiled: the Amalgamated Union of Foundry Workers was created to serve all workers in the foundry industry. This new union was the result of the decision to amalgamated made in June 1945 between the National Union of Foundry Workers, Ironfounding Workers Association and the United Metal Founders. The Amalgamated Moulders, the Iron and Steel Dressers, the Stove Grate
Workers, the General Iron Fitters and the National Engineering Brass Moulders were also at this meeting, but declined to amalgamate, as some unions were dissatisfied with the representation they would get on the new Executive Committee, while others because they did not obtain the majority vote amongst their members to legally amalgamate.
