Description
Membership certificate for George Chalke joining the Salford Branch of the friendly society, the Ancient Order of Rechabites.
George Chalke joined the Order in May 1882. Rechabites promoted complete abstinence from alcohol. Their name is derived from a biblical story about a household that abstains from drinking wine.
The order was founded in Salford in 1835, but soon went worldwide, with orders being set up as far as America and Australia. Today the order still exists as a finacial institution, which still supports abstinence.
