Description
An election leaflet featuring a portrait of Albert Victor Grayson, a white man with dark hair, wearing a formal suit and holding a letter.

This leaflet was delivered to voters in the Colne Valley by-election of 1907 on behalf of the Independent Labour Party (ILP) candidate Albert Victor Grayson (5 September 1881-?). Grayson was a prominent socialist of international fame, who won the election and became MP for Colne Valley from 1907-1910.

Grayson was originally from Liverpool, where he was active in the socialist movement alongside his lover, Harry Dawson. Grayson was a gifted public speaker, which people found more impressive due to his stammer. He had a mental breakdown in 1913, and retired temporarily from politics to fight in World War I. It is unknown when Grayson died as he mysteriously vanished in 1920 after accusing the Prime Minister, David Lloyd George of selling public honours, and of corruption.
