Description
Hoy Mas Que Nunca, Victoria (Today More Than Ever, Victory), by Josep Renau, 1938
This poster is a modernist style poster, and is a homage to the Republican Air Force, which remained loyal to the Republican government during the Spanish Civil War, after many other factions of the military joined Franco's rebellion in 1936. the image shows a pilot in flying goggles and cap looking to the sky, where a formation of 'V' is created from aeroplanes. The planes display the Republican flag on their wings.
The poster was designed by Josep Renau, who was a member of the Spanish Communist Party (PCE) during the Spanish Civil War. He was the General Director of Fine Arts between 1936 and 1939, and was responsible for the safeguarding and transport of the Prado Museum's collection from Madrid to valencia during the heavy bombing that Madrid suffered during the Battle for Madrid in 1936. He was also one of the organisers of the Spanish Pavilion in the International Exhibitiion held in Paris in 1937, where Picasso's "Guernica" was displayed.
