Object Name
Pipe
Description
A white clay pipe with a red tip.
White clay pipes were the most commonly used type of tobacco pipe in the eighteenth century, and were viewed as single use/disposable objects, as the clay was plentiful, and not particularly strong. They would be sold pre-filled, like disposable vapes and pre-prepared cigarettes are today. Broken remains of clay pipes are often found in dig sites that had rubbish mounds or middens on their land during the times that clay pipes were popular. It is unusual that this pipe has remained whole.
