The Women’s Co-operative Guild was founded in 1883. At its peak in 1939 this grew to around 89,000 members. The South Croydon branch was formed in 1927. Each section of the guild had its own floral emblem, and the white rose signified the southern section.

The guild campaigned on important issues for women including provision of birth control, nursery schools, and family allowances. It also championed peace, equality, and justice.
