Description
OSP script: Grunwick Strike Committee banner, 1976

Jayandi, one of the striking workers who had some art school training, designed this Grunwick banner and painted it with the help of Vipin Magdani, a member of the strike committee.

Influenced by the work of the Russian artist El Lissitzky it bears the initials of the two unions involved; the Association of Professional, Executive, Clerical and Computer Staffs and the Transport and General Workers' Union.

Materials: Acrylic paints on unbleached cotton fabric

Grunwick was a film and photograph processing laboratory in Northwest London. Six immigrant workers started the Grunwick strike in August 1976. They were prompted by low pay, compulsory overtime and harsh management. Grunwick workers, the majority of whom were Indian women migrants, were being paid just £28 a week at the time, compared to a national industrial average of £76.
