This banner was hand embroidered by Mrs. C. Mathews, a member of the Guild.

The National Union of Railwaymen Women's Guild (NURWG) was originally established in Crewe in 1900 to support the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants (ASRS). It began as a social organisation for female relatives of male railway workers. The Guild also assisted with the ASRS's political campaigns and raised funds for the union's orphan fund. Women's Guild members were also instrumental in founding the Women's Labour League. The Women's Guild affiliated to the newly formed National Union of Railwaymen (NUR) in 1913 when the ASRS joined the NUR.

Women working in this industry were unable to join unions such as the NUR until 1915 when increased numbers of women railway workers who entered the profession during the First World War became impossible to ignore. However, even then the NUR did not campaign for its women members, failing to campaign on equal pay for women until the late 1930s.
