Description
Membership certificate with emblem for âThe Hearts of Oak Societyâ. Certificate reads âThis is to certify that Mr Samuel Cecil Kinder was admitted a Member of the Hearts of Oak Benefit Society on the 15th day of July 1912.â Membership number illegible.
Emblem is topped by Britannia and shows Agriculture, Commerce, The Ocean and The River. The central depiction is of the âThe âHearts of Oakâ 131 Gunsâ shipâ whilst King Neptune and Father Thames sit at the bottom. A scroll reads âHearts of Oak, Hearts of Oak, Are Our Ships, Are Our Menâ.
The Hearts of Oak society was instituted and enrolled on 20 June 1842. The intention of the Society was to protect its members against distress through sickness. The Society was named after the navy, whose wooden ships protected Britain from invasion. The Society had Convalescent Homes.
