Description
A green and gold banner edged in red. The central panels show the skills of the woodworker's trade, and these panels are flanked by two men.

This banner, for the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers, Chatham (Kent) District, was made about 1899 and reconditioned around 1927 by George Tutill. The two figures are based on a portrait of James Blayne, union chairman in the 1860s. New Model Unions vied with each other in claiming ancient origins and the reverse of the banner has Joseph of Nazareth, 'the most distinguished member of the craft on record'.
