Description
During World War II (1939-1945) many towns in Britain gave generously to Spitfire Funds so that more Spitfire fighter aircraft could be built. This fighter and the Hurricane had played a major part in winning the crucial aerial Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940, but many more were needed. The Hurricane and other aircraft also had such funds but more was given to the Spitfire than any other aircraft. There were, remarkably, around 1200 Spitfires produced through the Fund. Rochdale, in Lancashire, raised enough money for two Spitfires in September 1940.

This Spitfire Fund collecting box was produced for the London borough of Camberwell, and its design was typical. One of the many places that the powerful engines for the Spitfire were made was Trafford Park in Manchester.
